Counselor to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations with responsibilities including Special Representative for Lebanon Morgan Ortagus is reportedly involved in an ongoing romantic relationship with a wealthy Lebanese businessman while being part of U.S. policy in the region, according to sources in Lebanon.

Morgan Ortagus was sworn in as President Trump’s Deputy Special Presidential Envoy to the Middle East on January 20, 2025, under Ambassador Steve Witkoff with a focus on Lebanon policy.  Her term in that role ended in June 2025 amid administration discomfort with her job performance, sources have told CDM.

Ortagus was brought back into U.S. Lebanese policy with the U.N. role in late June of 2025.

Sources have told CDM there are concerns in the U.S. government about the relationship due to her sensitive position. Ortagus is married and her husband lives in the United States.

She previously served in the first Trump Administration as the Spokesperson for the Department of State.  Ms. Ortagus is an active U.S. Navy Reserve Intelligence Officer, serving in the Secretary of Defense’s Naval Reserve Unit and holds a security clearance.

Ortagus served as Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State under Secretary Mike Pompeo, playing a key role in promoting the Abraham Accords.

Ortagus has frequently been seen recently with United States Special Envoy for Syria, and U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack, attending official U.S. government business in Lebanon, showing her continued involvement in U.S. policy.

CDM has reported on these developments.

The development comes at a delicate time for Lebanese affairs as the disarmament of the Iranian proxy army Hezbollah is an important goal of American policy in the Levant.
