On a recent trip to Lebanon, we were honored to speak with a Syrian Christian woman who is in hiding in Beirut. She is from the last Christian village in Syria that speaks Aramaic, the language of Christ.

Multilingual Abilities

Jesus was probably multilingual to some degree:

  • Aramaic — Primary/daily language.
  • Hebrew — For reading scriptures in synagogues (e.g., Luke 4:16–20) and religious contexts.
  • Greek — Possible for limited interactions (e.g., with Romans or in trade), but not his main language. history.com

This consensus has held among historians and biblical scholars for a long time, supported by archaeology, Dead Sea Scrolls, and other contemporary sources. While some debates exist about the exact balance of languages he used, the evidence overwhelmingly points to Aramaic as his native tongue for everyday life and teaching.
