Markets rallied after the close as Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick described a process where tariffs on Mexico and Canada may be eased as soon as tomorrow by the Trump team.
Financial markets had been down heavily during the day with news of retaliatory tariffs against the U.S.
“Both the Mexicans and the Canadians are on the phone with me all day today, trying to show that they’ll do better,” Lutnick said Tuesday afternoon, reported CNBC.
“And the President is listening because, you know, he’s very, very fair and very reasonable. So I think he’s going to work something out with them,” he said.
Lutnick described a deal in which Canada and Mexico agree to “do more,” at which point Trump would “meet you in the middle some way.”
“We’re going to probably be announcing that tomorrow,” he said.
Mexico may deserve to have tariffs scaled back due to their co-operation, but Canada is a different matter. Only one province, Alberta, has shown any willingness to meet the conditions President Trump set down. Other provincial leaders and Governor Trudeau himself, who supposedly resigned, have indicated that they prefer a fight. Fine. It's time somebody handed Canada its ass. They have been led down the wrong path for too long. For the record, most Canadians I have met can't stand their leaders
