ABC4 TV News (Salt Lake City, Utah) reported that controversy has resulted after approval of the construction of a 40,000-acre data center facility in Box Elder County, Utah, NNW of Salt Lake City.

They reported that the conflict turned physical when State Senator Jerry Stevenson allegely smacked an ABC4 TV reporter's phone out of his hand, during an interview attempt.

"It was CERTAINLY an interesting encounter," said the TV news reporter. "But we need to start with the context here. Stevenson is on the board of the Military Installation Development Authority, the lead authority overseeing the data center's development..."

Many residents oppose the data center development, and some are calling for a boycott of the state senator's business, a garden nursery.

Minutes later the police showed up.

The state senator, via a police officer, apologized for the incident, said the TV news reporter.

Afterwards, ABC4 TV News reported that county residents filed for referendums against the data center project.

"We feel like this has been pushed down our throats," said one woman leading the referendum effort.

The residents are concerned about the range of potential impacts.
