Recently, WVUE TV news (New Orleans) reported that rents have more than tripled in the area of the town of Rayville, Richland Parish, in northern Louisiana, with Meta's $27 billion AI data center under construction.
The parish is east of Monroe.
"A rental that might have been $600-700 a month is now $2500 a month," said Emmett Lee Brown, Tax Assessor for Richland Parish. "So it is not affordable for people that were here."
"I hate that," he continued. "It hurts my heart."
Some people couldn't afford it and had to leave the area, said a local resident.
The parish population of 20,000 people has witnessed 4,000 extra people living and working there with the construction, said the journalist.
The tax assessor also mentioned concerns about water and potential electricity cost increases, but said there was assurance that rate increases would not happen to consumers there.
The overall site, presumably including the Meta facility and Entergy energy company, is about 5-6 miles long, and a mile wide, said an Entergy spokesperson that spoke to WVUE about the project.
According to the journalist, the site is predicted to be one of the largest data centers in the world.
