Next week, Sir Keir Starmer will be the first European political leader to visit Trump in the White House since the start of the Presidency. He is going so he tells us to talk about NASTo, Russia, Ukraine and the rest and it appears he has been commissioned by the heads of the larger European countries to act as an envoy from them to MAGA land.
He is trying to be pacific, he needs to be, and he is trying to sound reasonable, after all the future defence of the European continent depends on it. He will of course fail, and across Europe the same old tropes will be carted out.
However, just before he does visit both he and the President have been talking about Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, a party that is currently leading the polling in the UK, only seven months after just scraping into Parliament with 5 seats but with 14% of the vote..

This is what Trump said about Farage at CPAC in Washington on Saturday to resounding cheers,
“I’ve been his friend for a long time, I wasn’t sure, am I supposed to be his friend? But it doesn’t matter to me if he did well or not, I mean I always liked him, but it’s easier to like him when he got the kind of votes he got, he took it by storm, but they say he is going to do even better this time.,,,
Thank you Nigel, what a great guy”.
Contrast that with Starmer talking about Farage on Sunday in Scotland, where he said he represents “a dangerous right wing politics”.
I.e. exactly what Stamer and his team have said for years about Trump.
And let’s have a look at #Starmers’ record in the last seven months. Tens of thousands of illegal# migrants continue to arrive on the UK’s shires where they are put up at the taxpayer’s expense. He locked up hundreds for hurty words on the internet while not deporting foreign rapists, drug dealers and murderers.
He is bringing in new taxation rules that will devastate British farming - but only raising $630 million in revenue, while simultaneously sending the same sum abroad to support African farmers.
His Climate Change agenda has the UK facing energy prices six times greater than the US, while refusing to grant licences for companies to access newly discovered natural gas fields in England that will provide enough energy to supply the UK for 30 years.
He is planning to pay Mauritius $24 billion dollars to take the Chagos islands where the US’;s Diego Garcia base provides security against the Chinese across the whole Indian Ocean and far beyond, Mauritius an open ally of China itself.
Rather than working flat out to deliver a free trade deal between our two great countries, he wants to use his time to upbraid the President.
Imagine the joint press conference. There they are backed by flags, leaving their respective lecterns
“Prime Minister, did you demand that the US fully back Zelensky? Did you tell the President that he was wrong to call Zelensky a dictator?”
“Mr Prime Minister, did you support over 100 Labour staff and members coming to America to help Joe Biden in the US elections?”
“Mr Prime Minister, did you support the Labour party members who came to America with the express purpose of defunding X?”
“Mr Prime Minister, did you address the issues of the President's rhetoric about annexing Canada, a country whose head of State is your own King?”
Or from British journalists,
“President Trump, you have clearly shown support for Nigel Farage as a UK politician saying he is a “great guy”. Do you agree with the Prime Minister that he is a ‘dangerous right winger?”
And so on
This state visit is hugely important and if focussed on matters of mutual interest could be massively successful, however Starmner’s deep socialist mindset and his indeed to please the socialist governments of Europe so that he can take the UK back into the EU will ensure the good stuff won't even make it into the agenda,
It's going to be a minefield.
