The CHEGA party has just finished second in Portuguese elections, breaking the liberal two-party stranglehold that has existed for 50 years.
In a surprise outcome, the hard-right populist party Chega (Enough) could yet claim second place with at least 54 seats, possibly pushing the center-left Socialists into third place, reported AP.
The Socialist Party, which has alternated in power with the Social Democrats for the past 50 years, had 55 seats and was contemplating its worst result since 1987.
The incumbent center-right Democratic Alliance won Portugal’s general election Sunday, official results showed, but it fell short of a majority in Parliament and was set to take office as a minority government.
