Narratives are being established on both sides of the Ukraine conflict.
France's Macron and Germany's Merz work to continue the war, declaring Putin is just manipulating President Trump, buying for time. Trump's recent comments may show this view gaining traction. The WSJ today reiterated this narrative, reporting The White House will soon issue further sanctions on Moscow.
The Russians are counting on Turkey's close relations with President Trump to get a second round of talks going in Istanbul.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the meeting in Moscow with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, "Of course, as [Russian President Vladimir] Putin said yesterday, we value all the opportunities Turkey has once again provided for another round of direct talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations".
"Our mutual intention to achieve results and consequently deepen our partnership was confirmed yesterday in the Kremlin when you were received by President Putin," the Russian foreign minister added, addressing his Turkish counterpart.
"I am confident that today's meeting will facilitate the implementation of the tasks assigned to us by our leaders," reported Russian state media TASS.
"Trump is showing emotion because he sees his Ukraine peace efforts are being sabotaged by European politicians", added Lavrov.

"Russia continues developing a draft memorandum regarding the future peace treaty, defining a number of aspects, such as the principles of the settlement, the timeline of the potential peace agreement, and the possible ceasefire for a limited time period if relevant agreements are reached," Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Maria Zakharova said.
"As soon as the memorandum is ready, and I would like to note that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is literally daily commenting on the process of its development, it will be transferred to Kiev. We hope that the Ukrainian side is doing the same and will send us their draft as they receive the Russian document."
Russia sees the EU working to halt the peace process.
"As far as I know and as I said yesterday, the countries that imposed range restrictions lifted them quite some time ago. So yesterday in Berlin I merely described what has been underway for a couple of months, namely, that Ukraine has the right to use the weapons it receives beyond its own territory against military targets on Russian soil," the German Chancellor Merz said during his visit to Finland at a joint press conference with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo aired by the Phoenix TV channel, reported TASS.
"In my opinion, this is necessary," he added. Merz insisted that "only those capable of attacking military bases on [enemy’s] soil can defend themselves."
Lavrov also declared, "The US "Golden Dome" project directly undermines strategic stability; Washington must abandon the deployment of weapons in space."
