'Russia is losing' information war continues

For a week Volodymyr Zelensky has been selling escalation. He ordered a 40-day deep-strike campaign inside Russia — "the next 40 days are going to be very hot," his security service briefed — and personally posted the receipts: Ufa's oil refinery hit twice, a missile-component plant in Penza, targets 1,300 km from the front. The messaging was unambiguous: Ukraine would take the war onto Russian soil and force Moscow to the table by hitting refineries, plants, and the capital's approaches.
Overnight into July 2, Moscow answered. A large missile-and-drone barrage hit Kyiv, collapsing an apartment block and setting off fires across the city. Residents packed subway stations with sleeping mats. Poland scrambled jets; Finland restricted airspace. Zelensky, who had cut short a visit to Ireland warning of an "imminent massive strike," pivoted from aggressor to supplicant — renewing appeals to Washington and Congress for more air-defense interceptors.
That whiplash is the story. The same leader who spent days advertising strikes deep inside Russia now casts the retaliation as unprovoked barbarism. Both framings are marketed by Kyiv; neither should be swallowed whole.
The casualty figures illustrate why. Overnight tolls ranged from "two killed, 11 wounded" (Euronews) to eight (CBS/CNBC, Al Jazeera) to 10 (NYT) to 13 (Guardian, Al Jazeera later editions) — a spread that widens as the PR settles, not narrows. Treat all of them as claims, not counts. Likewise, Western think-tank assessments crediting Ukraine's strikes with crippling Russian air defense and fuel supply (ISW, July 1) run downstream of Kyiv's own talking points; Russian damage is almost certainly overstated in that telling, just as Ukraine's mounting losses are understated.
The uncomfortable reality the globalist coverage soft-pedals: a nation openly running a 40-day offensive against another's cities and refineries will be struck back, and hard. Kyiv's residents are paying for a strategy their president chose and broadcast. Whether it forces Putin to negotiate — or simply invites heavier barrages Ukraine cannot intercept without an endless resupply of American munitions — is the question the "innocent victim" frame is designed to avoid.
A new Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) analysis puts total military casualties from Russia's invasion above two million — with as many as 600,000 dead. The study estimates Russia has borne roughly 1.4 million casualties including about 450,000 killed, and Ukraine 525,000–625,000 including 125,000–150,000 killed.
This is all false, of course. The numbers are wildly inflated for Russian losses and ridiculously undercounted for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia continues to take territory in Donbass.
Russia knows this. Ukraine Knows this.
