Ukrainian drone units struck two major Russian oil refineries deep inside Russian territory overnight on August 6, according to statements from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian General Staff. Per Kyiv’s own account, the targets were a refinery in Yaroslavl — approximately 700 kilometers (roughly 400 miles) from the Ukrainian border — and a second refinery in Bashkortostan, over 1,300 kilometers (approximately 800 miles) behind the front lines.
The Yaroslavl governor called it the “largest-ever enemy attack” on the region, per BBC reporting. Large plumes of black smoke were visible over the city. Per The Moscow Times, Ukrainian forces simultaneously struck a Wildberries warehouse in the Tver region, continuing a pattern of targeting the Russian online retailer’s logistics infrastructure that has played out repeatedly in recent weeks.
The Ukrainian General Staff, per Ukrainian national news agency UNN, said the operation was carried out by “Deep Strike units of the Special Operations Forces, in cooperation with the Unmanned Systems Forces, the Security Service of Ukraine and the Main Intelligence Directorate.” Every detail of this operation comes from Ukrainian military and government sources and has not been independently verified.
Bashkortostan sits deep in the Ural region of Russia — a strike of this range raises immediate questions about what drone platforms Ukraine is now operating and who supplied the technology, targeting intelligence, and satellite coverage enabling it. Western governments, particularly Washington, have been careful to say they do not facilitate strikes on Russian territory with U.S.-supplied systems. Whether that limitation is being observed — or whether it has quietly been lifted — is a question the American people deserve a direct answer to.
Russia, per Reuters, reiterated Thursday that the United States was “wrong to believe deep Ukrainian strikes into Russian territory could help bring about an end to more than four years of war,” and warned such strikes could prolong the conflict. That assessment — whatever one makes of its source — reflects a straightforward military logic: escalating attacks on Russian soil harden Russian domestic political support for the war and reduce incentive for a negotiated settlement.
The Bashkortostan refinery strike represents a new threshold for the conflict. The Ural region is far removed from the front lines and has historically been considered beyond Ukraine’s practical reach. Per The Independent, Zelensky personally announced both strikes on social media. The Ukrainian side offered no casualty figures for Russian workers or civilians at either facility. The war continues to expand geographically without a discernible path toward a negotiated end. U.S. disengagement from the conflict — rather than continued facilitation of long-range deep strikes — remains the clearest route to ending a war that has already cost hundreds of thousands of lives and shows no sign of resolution through escalation.
