Finland’s President: Ukraine’s Military Will Be One of Europe’s Strongest Security Guarantees

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said that Ukraine’s armed forces represent one of the strongest future security guarantees for Europe, describing them as the continent’s most modern military and a key buffer against potential aggression.
In recent remarks, Stubb urged serious consideration of what will underwrite European security going forward.
“People need to start seriously thinking what will be one of the strongest security guarantees for Europe in the future,” he said. “And I would argue that it is the military of Ukraine. It is the most modern military force that we have in Europe today. It is a buffer zone and an impediment for the potential of Russian aggression.”
Stubb also addressed the evolution of Russia’s military capabilities during the ongoing conflict. “One thing that I do want to remind everyone is that the Russian military was not capable of modern warfare when this war began, but now they are,” he noted.
“So they are also going to be much stronger when they regroup after the war. There are a lot of balances that we’re going to have to deal with.
”He added that Finland’s relationship with Russia will be different after the war, while expressing support for diplomacy over the longer term: “Our relationship with Russia will be very different, but I believe in the long run in diplomacy — and I stress, in the long run.”
The comments come as European leaders continue discussions on postwar security arrangements and the role of Ukraine in the broader regional architecture.
