Top U.S. and Russian officials have been discussing a plan to bring in American investors to the Nord Stream pipelines in order to eventually start exporting Russian gas to Germany once the war in Ukraine has ended, Reuters reports.

US investors could make a profit from Russian gas exported to Europe by taking a stake in the Nord Stream pipelines, reportedly under discussion by Kushner and Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev.

A White House official denied the report, saying there were no recent negotiations regarding the proposal. Another U.S. official told Reuters that a deal in the medium term is unlikely.

Kushner and Dmitriev also have discussed the potential sale of the international assets of the Russian oil company Lukoil to investors from the US, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, according to Reuters.

The Nord Stream pipelines were severely damaged by explosions in September 2022. Repairs as well as approval by European and German authorities and politicians would be needed to bring the pipelines back into operation. Nord Stream 2 had not yet started commercial operations.

The appeal for Washington is that there is considerable value in the Russian gas trade with Europe for American money to be placed in the pipelines. Whether that concept holds is another question.
