Before the Saturday of protests in Milan, the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent the soldiers on the streets of the city a week after the dramatic events of looting and clashes with the police. The troops will be 500 in addition to the hundreds already in Milan to support the 5,000 police forces, equipped with drones, checks at the stations, rapid intervention teams and on-line monitoring for incitement to violence.
Authorities worry the unrest in Milan could return. In the weekend just past young people, many of them “naturalized, second-generation Italians” along with foreign nationals, had gone from shop to shop in the streets off Milan’s Duomo square. They were after trainers, sportswear and sports equipment. Milan police estimated that in total 2,000 young people had taken part in the unrest. In total 45 people were arrested over the two days, including 34 minors. Under the Prime Minister’s new package minors will now face even harsher sanctions than before.
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala fears the violence could flare up again and backs the deployment of additional soldiers. Ahead of the Saturday demonstrations, the protective measures will reach past the downtown core, since unrest might also move into other parts of Milan. Welfare councilor Lamberto Bertolé (PD) says that “a lot more” needs to be done to “know who these young people are and what drives them”.
Other limitations of military intervention were described by the secretary general of the Fsp police union, Valter Mazzetti. In fact, troops will be able to intervene quickly, but they will not fill the lack of police officers on the streets, because dealing with protests requires specific training. Moreover, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto admitted that the military lacks important crowd control equipment. Recently, soldiers were allowed to use only plastic handcuffs, so called zip ties, and only in specific areas near the train stations. Spray and taser guns are not allowed for soldiers.
Security has also been stepped up in the capital. Stores in the upscale part of the city have been sealed off, and additional officers are patrolling around the Circus Maximus and Piazza del Popolo. A student demonstration from the right is also planned there, and its organizers are trying to keep it clear of possible disorder by urging attendees to uncover their faces and keep their hands in plain sight.
Protests are planned in at least seven other cities besides Rome and Milan including, as reported by Breitbart, French cities that will see the most attention abroad on Saturday with protests in a host of cities stretching from Portugal to Albania. As Breitbart reported, the “October 17 Movement” which issued the call for Saturday’s protests is working with student federations, grassroots trade unions and anti-war groups.

Time to put down the European left wing insurrection and go after the organisers and funders at the top.
