Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropped a bombshell on CNN Sunday, telling anchor Dana Bash that gain-of-function research — the same category of dangerous pathogen-enhancement experiments tied to the COVID-19 pandemic — is also responsible for the RSV epidemic currently killing American children and almost certainly for Lyme disease as well.

"The RSV epidemic that we have, which is the biggest killer of kids in this country today, came from these kinds of experiments," Kennedy told Bash. "Lyme disease almost certainly came from this kind of research. Clearly, the COVID-19 pandemic and many other global pandemics that we have had have come from gain-of-function research."

Kennedy challenged the entire scientific justification for the research, noting that scientists cannot point to a single historical case where gain-of-function experimentation produced a documented public health benefit. "People have been trying to put guardrails around it for generations, and it has not worked," he said. "Why would anybody spend NIH money developing that kind of technology? It is bioweapons technology. It has nothing to do with public health. It is the opposite of anything you would want to do with public health."

The CNN interview came days after HHS formally announced a new NIH policy banning federal funding for gain-of-function research, ending U.S. government support for experiments that enhance the transmissibility, virulence, or lethality of pathogens. "The federal government has a duty to protect the American people — not fund research that could put them at risk," Kennedy said in the HHS announcement.

Kennedy also turned his fire directly on former NIAID director Anthony Fauci, accusing him of lying to the American public about the origins of COVID-19 and condemning CNN and the corporate press for silencing scientists who raised questions. "Fauci was lying about everything," Kennedy told Bash. "You punished people who questioned him."

The Wuhan Institute of Virology received U.S. funding channeled through EcoHealth Alliance for coronavirus research. Fauci repeatedly denied before Congress that NIH funded gain-of-function work at Wuhan — a claim that documents later released under FOIA directly contradicted.
