President Maduro’s recent pandering toward China may indicate that growing U.S. pressure has got him retreating to the ropes. Aside from cartels and criminals designated as foreign terrorist organizations, Maduro has few allies left that aren’t generally considered global opponents to the rest of the free world.
Maduro recently gave a speech where he paused from addressing teachers and touted a Huawei phone that he bragged was a personal gift from President Xi and a device Maduro regularly uses to communicate with Xi. Maduro’s also recently met with Lan Hu, China’s ambassador to Venezuela, praising their talks.
This appears to be an attempt to hide behind big-brother China, quietly pleading for assistance, as U.S. focus on Venezuela increases with warships and Marines recently deployed to the area. A not so silent, call for a lifeline as the walls close in—using only the latest Huawei mobile device courtesy of President Xi, of course.
