In late fall of last year, the Kane County Board in Illinois decided it was time to increase taxes and fund more government. A proposition to increase Retail Taxes by .75% was placed on the ballot for the April 1st local elections.
A group of concerned citizens in Kane County, known as the Warriors, has been active for the past few years, advocating policies for a range of issues including smaller government and lower taxes. For the past three years, a priority effort has been engaging with the Kane County Board by attending meetings, speaking on a broad range of topics to shape opinions and hopefully influence Board decisions.

The Board’s decision to seek more tax revenues with a ballot initiative demanded a vigorous response. With the start of the new year, the group launched a campaign to combat the tax increase. An investment of funds was made to produce signs, handouts, door hangers, sticky notes, magnets and more to reach voters and seek their support for opposing the tax increase. A few examples of the VOTE NO messaging are:
*Hundreds of signs were produced, including 200 hundred 4 by 4s, 40,000 flyers, 12,000 sticky notes, hundreds of magnets for car messaging, and five radio broadcasts
*The 4 by 4 signs were distributed throughout the county on major roads and may have been a major factor in reaching voters. Signage was supported by both residents and small businesses, the very people who bear the burden of higher taxes
*Equipped with all of the above, sixty + members of the group engaged with the voters across the county via in person, texting and emails to share the message about the tax increase and gain voter support to VOTE NO.
*The most common reaction from voters when they were advised of the tax increase was surprise, or shock. Voters had no idea a tax increase of any kind was on the ballot.
The results of the election:
Yes 18,228
No 53,977
The initiative was defeated by over 35,000 voters. The voter turnout was 23.46% of eligible voters, far above the normal turnout in the upper teens range. All in, this is a win for citizen activism and voters who bear the tax burden
