A weird and strange "hobby" indeed.
In mid-January, Fox 13 TV news (Tampa Bay) reported that a man was arrested for putting nails on roads in Valrico, Florida near Tampa.
Fox 13 reported, "After several months of flat tires, neighbors in Valrico are relieved after a man was arrested for throwing nails into the roadway. Hillsborough County deputies said this has been happening for five months."
Apparently there were about 30 tire incidents.

Other similar incidents have been reported across the country over recent years.
Last month, WLTX TV news in Columbia, South Carolina reported that nails and screws were often left on busy roads in Kershaw County, northeast of the state capital city.
In Tacoma, WA south of Seattle, KING (NBC channel 5) TV news reported on the arrest of a man who threw thousands of nails onto a highway. This incident was reported in August 2025.
Other incidents like this have been reported in the Cincinnati area, near Gulfport, Mississippi, and northwest of Nashville.
