In interview with L. Todd Wood at CDM, Marwan Abdallah, head of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Kataeb Party, SLAMS current EU & UN Syrian refugee policy pertaining to Lebanon.
"It's insane, the arguments these countries are giving," said Abdullah, representing one of the smaller Christian parties in Lebanon.
Approximately two million Syrian refugees, mainly Sunni Muslim, were allowed into the country during the war. Abdullah said that many international organizations have stopped funding the Syrian refugees in Lebanon for health care and education, and other aid. He said they will get that aid once they return to Syria.
"Unfortunately until today, some countries in the UN, especially in Europe, are considering it's not yet safe for refugees to return to Syria," said Abdullah.
What does "safe" mean?
For the UN, said Abdullah, "It does not mean only having a conflict but them going back to their home country and being able to live a life that they deserve."
"I have an economic issue in my country," continued Abdullah. "Does that mean I can take a plane and go to Switzerland?"
Abdullah remarked that the Trump administration's policy is prioritizing financial reforms in the country, to prevent terrorism funding and money laundering and disarming Hezbollah. The Trump administration, he says, are also now looking at the Syrian refugee repatriation issues, which presents a long-term threat to Lebanon.
