BEIRUT, LEBANON -- At CDM we value truth and on-sight reporting, and we don't go along with the herd. Over the last 48 hours many online commentators have reported that Israeli Defense Forces targeted Christian sectors in Beirut.
That is simply not true. We have confirmed this with our Christian sources on the ground in Beirut.
The large amount of airstrikes targeted primarily the Shia sector, which was also targeted during and the previous round of conflict between Hezbollah and The Jewish State. I personally drove through this area last year to inspect the damage and many destroyed structures were still in rubble at that time.
Some mixed use districts in Beirut, meaning a mix of Shia and Sunni Muslims, were also targeted in the recent strikes.
The strikes are surgical and appear to target Hezbollah leadership.
You can debate the morality and legality of targeting civilian areas during war, but these were not indiscriminate bombings of civilians.
The Israeli military issued a broad, unprecedented warning ordering residents of the entire southern suburbs of Beirut to evacuate immediately for their safety, citing impending operations against Hezbollah infrastructure. This prompted panic, massive traffic jams, and an exodus of hundreds of thousands of people. Israeli spokesman Avichay Adraee posted maps and messages like "Save your lives, evacuate your homes immediately."
Additional alerts followed in March (e.g., for remaining residents and other areas) and as recently as April 8, 2026 (yesterday), when the IDF warned residents of seven specific neighborhoods in southern Beirut (including Haret Hreik, Burj Al-Barajneh, and Ghobeiry) to leave immediately ahead of strikes.
Reports from Beirut tell CDM that the secretary of Naim Qassem, the head of Hezbollah was killed. We don't have confirmation of other senior Hezbollah leadership killed.
In the south of Lebanon, the situation is different.
Israel is prosecuting a strategy of creating a buffer zone along the Lebanese border up to the Litani River and possibly beyond, to prevent further rocket attacks on northern Israel, and to prevent the manufacture and storage of weapons. Israeli families along the border were relocated and prevented from returning for months during and after the last conflict with Hezbollah.
"In general it doesn't seem that they're systematically targeting Christian areas in southern Lebanon, but they are putting pressure on the residents there so that they evacuate North. At least that's the feeling we have, reported a Christian source from Lebanon this morning.
"The Israelis seem to be careful not to alienate the Christians, but at the same time they want to empty the villages along the border from their inhabitants and they want to clear them. It seems that their strategy is to create an uninhabited no mans land or buffer zone between Israel and Lebanon."
A priest was killed in a tank strike in southern Lebanon in recent weeks; he had refused to leave his village along the border. It is not known if it was intentional. Other Lebanese Christians, members of the Free Patriotic Movement, one of the largest Christian parties were also targeted and killed. It is not known why they were targeted.
Christian areas in southern Lebanon will also be impacted by refugee flow from Muslim areas, affecting economics and demographics of their communities. This happened after the Syrian civil war as well.
Most of these Christians have voted/supported Hezbolla for decades. I get they had a civil war and lost and now they need to hedge their bets but what is Israel supposed to do?
