The tension between Chinese-infiltrated Canada and the Trump administration is ratcheting up as Washington looks serious about securing the Western hemisphere.
Trump administration officials have secretly met with Alberta separatists seeking independence from Canada.
The Alberta Prosperity Project, a fringe far-right group, held several meetings in Washington and is seeking US financial backing if a future independence referendum succeeds, wrote the FT.
US officials say the meetings were routine and involved no commitments. Treasury officials deny knowledge of any funding request.
“The U.S. is extremely enthusiastic about a free and independent Alberta,” the body’s legal counsel, Jeff Rath, told the FT. He attended the meetings.
“We’re meeting very, very senior people leaving our meetings to go directly to the Oval Office,” he claimed.
Sources told the publication that the group wants another meeting in February where they plan to request a $500 billion credit facility to help prop up the province financially if an independence referendum passes. A referendum has not yet been called, wrote The Daily Beast.
China is also loudly complaining about American goals in Greenland.
