Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton have quietly blocked the Justice Department from obtaining transcripts it needs to prosecute former CIA Director John Brennan for allegedly lying to Congress — and they’ve been doing it for months, according to reporting by John Solomon at Just the News.
Earlier this year, DOJ sent letters to both the Senate Judiciary and Intelligence Committees demanding fully unredacted transcripts of Brennan’s testimony regarding the Russia collusion investigation — including records tied to the now-debunked Intelligence Community Assessment and the Steele dossier. The letters set a hard deadline of February 23. That deadline came and went. So did the next two months.
All that is required to transmit the evidence is a floor resolution and a simple Senate vote. Neither has happened. Thune’s team told DOJ they are trying to secure “unanimous consent” rather than hold a floor vote — which means a single Democrat can hold the entire investigation hostage. The House, by contrast, already voted to hand over its version of the same evidence weeks ago.
The obstruction is all the more striking because it involves a Republican-controlled Senate refusing to help a Republican-controlled executive branch prosecute a figure that the same Senate referred for prosecution in the first place. Jim Jordan’s House Judiciary Committee sent a criminal referral on Brennan to DOJ in October 2025, alleging he made false statements about the CIA’s use of the Steele dossier in drafting the 2017 ICA — the fraudulent document that set Russiagate in motion.
Prosecutors in Fort Pierce, Florida — led by veteran attorney Joe diGenova, who was appointed to lead the Russia collusion accountability case — need the Senate transcripts to complete the evidentiary picture. DiGenova is a former U.S. Attorney who prosecuted D.C. Mayor Marion Barry and convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard. The stakes could not be higher: this is a grand jury investigation into whether Obama and Biden-era officials weaponized intelligence tools to destroy Donald Trump and his supporters.
Brennan, for his part, has publicly claimed he is the victim of a politically motivated witch hunt and sued the Trump administration in July to force preservation of records tied to the investigation. He currently collects between $50,000 and $75,000 per speaking engagement and serves as a senior intelligence analyst for NBC News and MSNBC — institutions that spent years amplifying the very narratives he is now accused of helping manufacture.
DOJ has one escalation option remaining: serve the Senate with a formal grand jury subpoena. That’s a step that would mark an unprecedented confrontation between a Republican administration and a Republican Senate — and would force Thune and Cotton to defend, publicly, why they are shielding a man their own chamber voted to refer for prosecution.
The question the American people deserve an answer to is simple: If Brennan did nothing wrong, why won’t the Republican Senate let the evidence speak for itself?
