Vice President of the United States, JD Vance said on Thursday that all available tools are being left "on the table" to put pressure on Iran including military, economic, diplomatic, and covert action while no talks with Iran can occur until the regime ceases its aggressive behavior towards commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Vance explained that he would not detail out the various military plans that are currently being considered by the President and the military, because to do so would be to take away the flexibility of the President in order to make a decision as to what is in the best interests of this country.
"Obviously, there are a lot of additional tools that we have at our disposal. Some of those the President will use, and others he will not. Everything that could happen is on the table — economic pressure, military pressure, diplomatic pressure, and covert pressure. All of these are tools in the President's toolkit."
Iran, according to the vice president, is "acting like a terror state in the Strait of Hormuz" and the administration's new approach is also "a way to prevent a global energy crisis from getting worse."
"Because the Iranians refuse to stop acting like terrorists in the Strait of Hormuz, we would have had an energy crisis because of the US military's efforts to protect the global commercial shipping lanes of the world," Vance said.
As Operation Economic Outcast continues to maximize pressure on the regime, the Vice President was joined today by his European counterparts as the European Union formally joins the U.S.-led sanctions coalition. Iran's continued aggression against global maritime trade — specifically targeting tankers and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz to several vessels — has placed unprecedented pressure on global energy markets for nearly two months.
Vance's acknowledgment of additional tools at the administration's disposal even suggests that the current military operation, known as Operation Economic Outcast, is not the sum total of what the administration is capable of when it comes to putting pressure on Iran. He could be signaling a ramp-up in covert actions, the further declaration of military targets, or even secret back-channel talks with Iranian officials — as long as those discussions are not made conditional on an end to Tehran's attacks on shipping.
