To mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the United States Mint is releasing a permanent symbol of remembrance to be placed in the pockets of Americans everywhere. The special issue 2026 Semiquincentennial Enduring Liberty Half Dollar features the privy mark “9-11-01” surrounded by the words “NEVER FORGET” on the obverse.
When the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the special issue coin for the Semiquincentennial of the Founding of the United States on September 10, he noted that, “As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, we honor the memory of those we lost and the courage of those who risked their lives to save their fellow Americans. A quarter century later, our promise to the victims and their families remains the same: we will never forget.”
The coins were minted at the Philadelphia Mint in circulating quality. They can be pre-ordered on the Mint’s website until September 25 at 3 p.m. ET and are expected to ship on December 3. The coins are being sold in 20-coin rolls for $40 and in 100-coin bags for $100.
The face of Lady Liberty fills the obverse of the coin. It is not a complete figure of Liberty, but rather her gaze. She looks forward with determination. The word “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is listed above her head along with the words “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The year “1776” is listed on the bottom left side of the coin and “2026” on the bottom right side of the coin. The privy mark “9-11-01” and the words “NEVER FORGET” are also located on the obverse of the coin.
The reverse designed by Beth Zaiken and sculpted by Darla Jackson of the Mint’s design team features Lady Liberty handing off the torch of freedom to the next generation of Americans. The flame is traveling in the reverse direction of Liberty, leaving a trail of it behind her. The phrase KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY from James Madison completes the design on the reverse of the coin.
U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis wrote that by offering the special coins for public sale, “we are providing the public with a tangible reminder of how our great Nation came together on that fateful day and we hope to provide an opportunity to inform and educate the many younger generations of Americans who were not born until after that tragic day of the sacrifices made by so many on that fateful day.”
To recall, a run of 2,983 special-issue Enduring Liberty Half Dollars were minted at West Point on August 21, 2026, and presented to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York to honor the 2,977 victims of the 2001 attacks as well as the six killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Those coins carry the inscription “ALWAYS REMEMBER.”
The public-sale Philadelphia coins carry “NEVER FORGET.” Two mints, two inscriptions, one promise.
This design will only be used for one year — the Kennedy half dollar returns in 2027. This coin therefore becomes a piece of coinage history, converging the nation’s 250th birthday, the 25th anniversary of 9/11, and the first appearance of Liberty on a circulating half dollar since 1947. Three dates on one coin: 1776, 9-11-01, 2026.
