Donald Trump announced late on Wednesday a "game-changer" for the US in which it has secured "infinite life" control of Greenland's security at no cost to taxpayers in what is a "generational achievement."
Under the terms of the agreement dubbed by Trump as the "Infinite Life" Agreement, the United States has secured a 100 year plus lease of Greenland's security under the control of the US in a deal brokered by Trump with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland. The deal effectively bars adversaries including China and Russia from ever establishing a military base in Greenland or even maintaining a military presence in the island. Nor will any adversary be able to make sensitive investments in Greenland without the written approval of the US.
The island of Greenland is of strategic importance to the United States because it is located at the northernmost tip of North America and is situated astride the critical North Atlantic shipping lanes. Additionally, Greenland provides the United States with a radar horizon that extends deep into Russian and Chinese airspace and it is home to the U.S. Pituffik Space Base, (previously known as Thule Air Base) which serves as an early warning system for ballistic missile attacks. As Arctic experts and defense analysts have noted for years, whoever controls Greenland will control the High North.
Reuters previously reported that Denmark had told the United States it would not consider selling Greenland and was opposed to the country establishing a military base there. The agreement is a security compact and not a purchase of Greenland by the United States, thus sidestepping the previous rejection by the Danish government.
Trump confirmed that the U.S. will immediately start to develop a large military base in Greenland, in partnership with the people of Greenland. The agreement is designed to be permanent — an "Infinite Life" Agreement with no expiration.
This deal immediately caps Chinese and Russian aggression in the region, since they can never establish a military base, have a military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without Washington's written approval. This deal also finally puts an end to China's aggressive attempts to expand Arctic shipping routes and to Russia's attempts to reconstitute its Cold War Arctic military infrastructure.

"I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns. There will be NO COST to the United States! At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America. Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval. For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it. I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation. This is an 'Infinite Life' Agreement, there is no end! We are very honored and proud of what has just taken place, and everything agreed to today will be cherished by the American People. We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many. We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction. This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies. We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a magnificent future with respect to this large, and highly strategic, parcel of land. We will be very protective of it! This is a dream come true for the United States of America, one that is very important, historic, and special. Thank you for your attention to this matter! A historical deal has been made. The agreement excludes China, Russia, and all other adversaries from Greenland for generations to come. In a most innovative and unexpected move of far-reaching foreign policy consequences, President Trump managed to reach an agreement with a NATO ally, thereby finally achieving a strategic objective that had been rejected by the foreign policy establishment for generations.
