The public is waiting anxiously for US Attorney John Durham’s conclusion for his investigation into the origins of Crossfire Hurricane. This probe already resulted in a former FBI-lawyer pleading guilty to altering an email to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on Carter Page, and there may be more indictments on the way. As seen in Trump’s rally in Nevada Sunday evening, many Americans believe that Obama spied illegally on President Trump's campaign, and they want justice. The crowd cheered “lock him up” about the former president, and after years of the Russia collusion conspiracy, they want answers as to why President Obama opened an investigation on a US candidate for president.
There has been speculation that Durham will wait until after the election to reveal his report. Democrats, in particular, are holding their breath that the DOJ won’t break this precedent. But now, Washington is looking at the latest development, and wondering if the resignation of one of Durham’s top aides on Friday serves as a clue. Durham’s office confirmed Nora Dannehy’s resignation, but sources have said it has nothing to do with pressure to wrap up the case before the election. Dannehy has worked with Durham for years, and Durham’s office did not provide any more information about the reason for her departure.
GOP lawmakers have also provided some clues that Durham’s case may provide some bombshell information before the election. As new information emerged last week that Mueller’s aides wiped their phones, Senator Lindsey Graham expressed his frustration in an interview with Sean Hannity, and said “We’ll talk in about 10 or 12 days and we’ll see if there is something else you can get mad about.”
President Trump is at the top of the list of politicians who want the investigation to wrap up, and said Americans may not have to wait too long to hear what Durham finds. In a press conference on Thursday, Trump called Durham a “very, very respected man,” and that there may be “much more” than just a report.
Attorney General William Barr confirmed in an interview that there could be more indictments, and that the DOJ may release the results of the investigation before the election. If so, this could be quite the October surprise.
