In a packed meeting last night, the St. George, Maine Select Board that oversees town matters, voted in favor to adhering to the state's Human Rights Law regarding gender identity, marking another battle point regarding "boys identifying as girls" playing in girls sports.

The conflict also marks another battle front between far left and right with classic liberals, the former adhering to new, controversial "gender ideology" versus "biological sex" classification between male and female.

In the St. George context, this concerns a 3rd / 4th grade girls' basketball team by parks and recreation. The decision took place during a special town meeting to address this matter specifically. (See the letter prompting the meeting by "Parents of St George Children".)

A member of the Select Board stated that the question at hand was whether the town would still follow the Maine Human Rights Act, passed (presumably) in 2005, which includes "gender identity", and in effect advocates for gender ideology.

St. George is about 84 miles NE of Portland and has a population of about 2600 people.

The discussion and public comments, over 70 minutes, began after those in the room did the Pledge of Allegiance.

A representative of the State of Maine's Human Rights Commission, Colin Hurd, attended the meeting via Zoom. The Select Board also stated that they were advised by the town's attorney.

One speaker in support of the boy playing in 3rd grade / 4th grade girls sports cited controversial organizations like PFLAG and Equality Maine, as resources to understand gender identity. These organizations have been slammed by new LGB organizations like LGB Courage Coalition, fundamentally opposed to TQ, including trans gender identity and ideology.

LGB Courage Coalition adheres to definitions of people by biological sex, not gender identity.

It is understood that TQ activists, likely from outside St. George, also attended the meeting.

Another member of the public with a Master's in Education degree also supported including the "boy identifying as a girl", unsurprisingly. This again highlighted concern about far left indoctrination at university schools of education, which then impacts K-12 teaching and policy. In lockstep, she also directed the townfolk to the two controversial organizations.

Maine House of Representative Anne Higgins Matlack (Democrat - St George) also supported the "inclusion", unsurprisingly. She compared the situation to... race.

One father wasn't having it, and he spoke to the crowd and advocated for lobbying for tax credits for homeschooling at the state level.

Other opponents raised concern about fairness, the conflict in the law between biological "sex" and gender identity ("applying the law unevenly"), and referred to federal law.

The father's comments and others opposing start at the time below in the video of the meeting.

Listen to the heartbreaking response by another town resident:

After the public comments, a member of the board said that they were advised that the town could face a lawsuit and that members of the board could personally face legal action, if not adhering to the interpretation of the Maine Human Rights Law.
