In 1955, Richard Daley was elected Mayor of Chicago, the beginning of one-party rule in Illinois that continues to this day. After the election, when asked about reform, the Alderman of the 43rd ward, Paddy Bauler, said: “Chicago ain’t ready for reform.” Well, that was seven decades ago, and city as well as state-wide voters are still waiting.
In Illinois today, the clear winners are politicians, public sector employees and their unions. Taxpayers have one job: fund the state government designed by the winners.
For seventy plus years, the Democratic party of Illinois has held a majority of roles in local and state government, using public office powers and authority to achieve its party goals. The party tools include influence peddling, no show jobs for allies, sweetheart contracts and more to maintain control and exercise power. Insiders are protected, applying the well-tried belief that if you go along, and get along, you will be rewarded. It works at all levels of government in Illinois.
What does Illinois have to show for seven decades of Democratic Party rule? (All data noted is from the IL Report page of Kane County Speaks.com)
- IL GDP ranks fifth in the nation, but 44th in economic growth per year, burdened by high taxes that deprive the private sector of funds for growth and prosperity.
- Since 2018, the IL GDP has grown 7.4%, while the IL Budget has grown 36.5%, far outpacing the growth of the state economy.
- IL job growth ranks 45th out of fifty states, despite the size of the state economy noted.
- Regarding IL state debt, each taxpayer owes $38,800 to pay down debt. In two states, NJ and CN, taxpayers owe more.
- IL population has declined by 880,000 plus in the last decade. The population of Chicago in the 1920’s and today is about the same: 2.6 million.
- In an annual survey of CEOs of major companies, IL ranks 48th out of fifty states for locating or expanding a business.
- IL has 8943 government units, more than 4000+ compared to the next state (TX at 5533). The national average is 1818 government units.
- IL has over 7300+ taxing units, number one in the country, several thousand more than the next state.
- IL spends $1B+ per year to support 500,000+ illegals seeking sanctuary (food, housing, education, medical care and more)
- On the matter of crime, the US ranks third out of 193 countries for murder rates. If you remove Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC, St. Louis and New Orleans, the US ranks 189.
The two major successes of the Democratic party control are noted. Illinois has 8943 government units, nearly 5X the national average. Consider the possible tens of thousands of public sector jobs under control of the party. Every state in the nation gets state services done with fewer agencies and people. Is this corrupt? Secondly, IL has over 7300+ taxing bodies, number one in the nation versus 49 states, all focused on taking dollars from citizens and businesses to fund more government.
Is this the best that Illinois can do? Given the short list of key issues impacting families and businesses, is the plight of Illinois a result of corruption, or incompetence? You decide.
Regardless of fault, if Illinois made a positive commitment to reform, here’s a short list of where to focus and deal with the above:
- Reduce taxing entities to provide relief to families and businesses.
- Collapse and consolidate government units, end overlaps and duplications, reduce staff, improve efficiencies of functions.
- Develop policies to enable businesses to thrive and prosper, supporting job growth for taxpayers as the IL economy expands.
- Bring back consequences for criminal conduct, enforce laws and enable court rulings to protect citizens from criminals.
Maybe IL is not ready for reform, but the voters are!

The Illinois State Pen has a special "Governor's Wing" because every former governor ends up in prison.
"Is The Illinois Democratic Party Corrupt? Or Just Incompetent?" If you need to ask this question, you're too dumb to entertain with my attention.
