Tucker Carlson has told the Columbia Journalism Review he intends to "help build a third party," pronouncing America "a one-party state posing as a democracy" that "needs to be broken." The diagnosis is one CDM has long shared: a bipartisan Washington that agrees on the things that matter most — endless foreign war, open borders to cheap labor, a financialized economy that hollows out the man making sixty thousand dollars a year. When Carlson says the government's "first priority" should be "the welfare of its own people," he is speaking plain truth that neither party will say out loud.
The question is not whether the critique is right. It is whether the messenger means it — or whether this is another act, or whether he is working for someone else who wants power.
Consider the timing. The interview drops roughly four months before the November 3 midterms, precisely when a "burn it down" message peels the most disaffected voters away from a Republican coalition Carlson has publicly divorced. He vows to "do everything I can" to build the thing, then rules himself out as a candidate — "I don't want to be a candidate." A movement with no candidate, no platform, no filing deadlines met, launched through a friendly press interview rather than an organization, is indistinguishable from a very effective way to stay the center of the conversation. The poster who surfaced the quote added the obvious asterisk: "Yeah, right."
Skepticism cuts in every direction here, and CDM applies it to all sides. The establishment Carlson attacks is real and deserves the beating. But "third party" talk in America is a well-worn genre — from Perot to No Labels to Andrew Yang's Forward — that reliably raises profiles, mailing lists, and subscription revenue while never troubling the two-party duopoly it claims to threaten. Carlson now runs his own paid media network. A permanent insurgency is not just a politics; it is a business model. He also told CJR he hasn't spoken to Trump since the Iran war began — a genuine rupture, or a positioning move to inherit the America-first mantle if Trump's coalition fractures?
None of this means the effort is fake. It means the burden is on Carlson to prove it isn't. Real parties are boring: ballot access in fifty states, county organizers, candidates who lose winnable-looking races and come back anyway. If in six months there is a legal entity, a slate, and a single soul on a ballot, the sincerity question answers itself. If there is only more content — interviews about the party, monologues about the party, a party that exists mainly as an audience — then Americans will have been sold the feeling of a revolt in place of the work of one.
The task for Tucker's new party will be to pull many from the center-left. Otherwise, the effort will simply put the communists in power.
The grievance is authentic. Whether the vehicle is, remains unproven. Watch what gets built, not what gets said.
TR's third party gave America President Wilson. Perot's party gave America Slick Willie. Cuomo independent run gave, NYC and America commie Mandami. If you think third parties are good for America think again. Those people who push third parties are narcissists, egomaniacs who put their ego ahead of America.
