The controversy started with coverage of a campus event, where a Daily Wire reporter said Senator Elissa Slotkin described a plan Democrats would carry out should they win in November. According to the report, the Senator wanted to discourage young people about to graduate from taking jobs in the Trump administration. Daily Wire reporters were present at the liberal campus hosting the event and published their account of her remarks a few days afterward.
The initial reporting on Slotkin came from University of Chicago student Michael Bicksel, a senior editor for the Chicago Thinker. The Chicago Thinker then went on to tweet out several of the quotes, helping to make the story known to a wider audience. Daily Wire reports that the outlet heard Slotkin’s comments firsthand at the campus event, and that an extended clip of the event includes a host nodding in agreement as he says that people who work for the Trump administration could become “pariahs” of sorts, subject to political, social, and even possible legal action.
Daily Wire reports that Slotkin has answered by saying her point was simply that members of the Trump Administration who break the law should be held legally accountable. Still, her remarks had been aimed specifically at young people just starting out in their careers. Formal ethics complaints have been filed against her, with additional ones expected. The President has also publicly criticized her.
Because the midterm elections are just two weeks away, Daily Wire argues that time is short. It contends that if Democrats returned to power, young staffers throughout government would be targeted with the support of Congress and dark money donors. As evidence, Daily Wire cites earlier Democratic-led prosecutions of President Trump and probes of officials who served in his first administration.
The question that Daily Wire is demanding for Democratic officials and candidates is simple: do you want to deter young conservatives from working in the federal government? According to Daily Wire, Democrats have so far avoided answering on the record.
