Barack Obama is touring the country giving speeches to audiences who are eager to hear what the former President has to say about the current state of politics. His comments are particularly telling for how they reveal the subversive world that he built over the course of his eight years in office to be crumbling.
Barack Obama spoke at a forum recently. The comments he made at that forum offer insight into the current state of the former President and the world he helped to build over the past several years.
As for how Obama views America, he said that "We have conquest, and we had slavery, and Native Americans were removed from their land, and we did a bunch of terrible things." This is always Obama's starting point for America — the list of bad things it has done. He said that the American Revolution "started, truthfully, with a bunch of rich guys not wanting to pay their taxes." Therefore, democracy was not the "beginning" of America or the "core animating principle" at the start of the American Revolution. Rather, it was an afterthought.
Of course, Obama lays the problems of the culture wars at the foot of his successor. "Part of why culture wars seem to accelerate and people feel so threatened is because it used to be that folks in San Francisco and folks in Lubbock, Texas didn't necessarily know how the other was living, and now it's in their faces, and they feel threatened by that," he said. However, he helped build the ideological monoculture that imposed the values of San Francisco upon the rest of the country, creating the very situation he now laments.
He is correct to identify the mechanism of the culture war but that does not mean he and others did not build the ideological monoculture that has been imposed upon many of America's leading institutions: the corporations, the military, the universities, and the federal bureaucracy. And now, this culture that he helped create is being forced upon the people of Lubbock, Texas.
Speaking of taxes, the President said, "I would argue that wealthy people in this country do not pay enough in taxes. And the very ultra-wealthy oftentimes pay no taxes and have figured out how to game the system." He went on to explain that billionaires are moving to Florida in part because they can avoid paying state income taxes, a "rounding error in their wealth" due to their "entitlement" mentality that says "I should not have to give up anything."
It is rich that the man who presided over the greatest increase in federal surveillance in history, the attempt to use the IRS to go after conservative non-profits, and the enrichment of his Wall Street donors is now the little guy's best friend.
Obama also spoke about artificial intelligence, saying that he's been "tracking" the issue for a long time. He assembled a commission and produced a report on the issue in the last couple of years of his presidency. "Apparently it got put in the same bin as my pandemic proposal," he said. "It wasn't picked up by the administration that followed me." His main concern with current AI is that there is "a misalignment between what our society needs and the commercial imperatives that these companies are facing." He added, "The reason you are doing that is because you have to market a product that people will pay money for." His solution? "It is really important for us to have a competent government and a serious, bipartisan conversation around this issue." Note that for Obama, as ever, the solution to every problem is more Obama-approved bureaucracy.
Obama also correctly identified what AI will do to white-collar employment: "Currently, partners at law firms rely on a bunch of junior associates. They charge a lot of money for the time of those junior associates. There's a pyramid. The promise to the associates is they work their way up, and at some point they'll be at the top of the pyramid and they can make some bank. If you are investing in AI at a law firm — and they're pretty expensive — the reason you're making that investment is because it will allow you to do things without those associates. And that's at a fairly high-skilled, highly-trained job. So, the economic disruptions that will come at this speed, I think, are going to be profound as well."
The people building out the next generation of AI to automate white-collar work are products of the same progressive echo-chamber that Obama peddled to corporate America, to our military, and to university campuses and federal bureaucracies across this country for eight long years.
Much more telling, however, is the perch from which he is surveying the Trump administration's increasing hostility to the press. "My imagination could not foresee some of the stuff that's going on right now," he mused of current press restrictions. "I'm trying to think what would have happened if I had said, 'You know what, Fox News, get out of here.' It's unimaginable!"
He wouldn't have had to ban Fox from the White House press corps. The media already self-censored on his behalf during his time in office — not because they were timid, but because they were happy to amplify his message and bury stories that conflicted with it.
The world Obama built — the capture of institutions by a left-of-center ideology, a bloated and abusive administrative state, a press corps aligned with his views, a foreign policy supported by fellow globalists — is coming undone, piece by piece. His tour thus far is that of a man slowly realizing the water has gone out of the pool, unable or perhaps unwilling to do much of anything about it.
