Volodymyr Zelensky warns of Ukraine conflict spreading to Asia, describing North Korea's possible military involvement with Russia as a danger that should be feared by nations in the region and prompting them to act. He apparently wants to obtain more international support, more arms and more pressure to be exerted on Russia to expand the conflict.
Speaking in an interview with Japan's NHK television network, Zelensky stated that North Korea had sent "tens of thousands" of troops to fight alongside Russian forces. However, the Ukrainian leader warned that as these troops gain experience of modern warfare, they will soon pose a threat to Japan and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Zelensky claimed that Russia was allowing North Korea to gain combat experience "without big losses" and that this would increase the security threats to East Asia.
These claims are only based on information provided by Zelensky; the number of North Korean troops in Ukraine was allegedly estimated by Ukrainian intelligence. According to that intelligence, in total North Korean troops amount to 125,000-150,000 servicemen. Ukrainian intelligence has provided various estimates over the past few months, which are subject to their own inflation for political purposes.
This is not the reportage of a conflict. This is a very aggressive campaign to get Zelensky more support in the region. Most of his interviews over the last three years of the conflict have been focused on how to frame the war in a way that would be existential to the listeners of his interviews, and then ask for money, for arms, and for political support to continue the war.
This is completely at odds with the position of President Trump who has for three years maintained that the war in Ukraine should be brought to a close through negotiation rather than be escalated. The globalist establishment - funding his many tours of media across the world from Tokyo to Brussels - has consistently been opposed to this. Today's NHK interview is simply another tactic to internationalise the war in Ukraine, to increase the stakes and to deny the possibility of peace in order to keep selling more and more arms.
It's worth noting that Zelensky is referring to the well-documented fact that North Korea and Russia have entered into a military partnership, a result of NATO pushing for the Ukraine conflict. His latest lobbying campaign will likely be met with skepticism, as his arguments are far from neutral. For three years, the Ukrainian leader has been arguing that every country in the world is fighting his war, and now he wants to bring the conflict to Asia as well. His words should be read with a healthy dose of skepticism.
