Miami Vice is headed back to the big screen and the cast is growing. André Holland, best known for Moonlight and The Knick, is the latest addition to Universal’s Miami Vice ‘85, a new film which will star Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as the lead characters from the 1980s television series. Holland is a Bessemer, Alabama native, a fact that brings this bit of news to the attention of Birmingham-based Bham Now.
As for his role in Miami Vice ‘85, Holland is keeping it under wraps. Deadline notes that his character description has not been released yet. Blex Media reports the roles for Holland and the following actors have also not been disclosed: Andrew Schulz, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, and Alden Ehrenreich. The film will also star John Leguizamo, Walton Goggins, and Edi Gathegi.
Miami Vice ‘85 is a movie written by Dan Gilroy and directed by Joseph Kosinski. The film is set in the glamorous yet corrupt world of Miami in the mid 1980s. It is inspired by the pilot episode of the original NBC series “Brother’s Keeper” which aired on September 16, 1984. In the two hour episode, vice cop Sonny Crockett is paired with New York City detective Ricardo Tubbs who has traveled to Miami to exact revenge on drug lord Calderone for the murder of his brother.
Jordan and Butler will star as Crockett and Tubbs. Blex Media reports that Goggins and Leguizamo have both been announced as villains, though it is unclear whether either role is tied to Calderone. Gathegi will play a low-level thug looking to better himself but ends up in over his head.
The episode is known for a high-octane driving scene between Sonny Crockett and his new partner Tubbs as they cruise the streets of Miami in Crockett’s black Ferrari Daytona Spyder to the song “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins. Will this famous scene make it into the new film? We’ll have to wait and see.
“Miami Vice ’85”, a new film from screenwriter Dan Gilroy and director Joseph Kosinski, will begin production this year and hit theaters on May 19, 2028. It is to be shot for IMAX and follows the characters created by Anthony Yerkovich in the series developed by Yerkovich and Michael Mann and originally executive produced by the two. Dylan Clark and Kosinski will be producing.
The actor recently finished filming the forthcoming Amazon series Delphi, starred in Duke Johnson’s feature film The Actor, which hit theaters in March, and produced and starred in 2025’s Love, Brooklyn under his own Harper Road Films banner and producer Steven Soderbergh. He also starred in Hulu’s Exhibiting Forgiveness opposite Andra Day.
Away from the screen, Holland is investing in his hometown. The Birmingham Times reported in 2024 that he purchased the historic Lincoln Theatre in downtown Bessemer in 2017. Working with his mom Mary and sister Natalie, under the umbrella of his non-profit The Holland Project, the aim is to return the building to its former glory as a single screen cinema showing classic and contemporary films, but with added community resources including a host of workshops to teach local kids the art of acting and making films. His dad Donald was also part of the original efforts to bring the venue back to life before his passing in 2022.
As for the largely unknown roles of the cast, how will Kosinski and Gilroy make room for the necessary interactions between the main two characters and give the other characters enough screen time in this massive ensemble?
