There has been much concern expressed across government as well as in the private sector about supply chain vulnerability leading up to the 2020 election. Two of the three major electronic voting system vendors use parts made in China for their machines. It has been well documented that China installs tainted hardware in machines to allow for IP theft and other types of malfeasance- why not an election?

In December of 2019, a leader in Supply Chain risk analysis published a study about the vulnerabilities of the machines used in the United States, specifically from China. Curiously, their study is now removed from the internet and unable to find. However, there was a press release that stated the following - Study of Voting Machines Finds 1 in 5 Components From China.

Although this study has been “disappeared” there are other studies available that assessed the vulnerability including here, from September of this year: Securing U.S. Elections Against Cyber Threats: Considerations for Supply Chain Risk Management

This is a very brief overview of information. A more detailed investigative summary is available, including work highlighting Microsoft, Tom Burt, SolarWinds, and FireEye.
