Turkey is a rising power.
Many would not have seen this coming, even a few years ago. Turkish President Erdogan seems to be very good at becoming what he needs to be to remain in power, and to improve Turkey's position on the geopolitical stage.
President Erdogan famously shot down a Russian fighter jet along the Syrian border with an American-made F-16 a decade ago. After that, Russian President Putin shut off Turkish tourism and Erdogan changed his tune, becoming closer to Moscow.
Turkey remains an important member of NATO, the only member nation besides the United States that has a robust military capability. This is in spite of NATO's refusal to arm Turkey with its most advanced weapons, and the EU's refusal to admit Turkey to the club.
In the last few months, Ankara has solved the problem with the Kurdish PKK, which has disbanded and laid down its weapons. Erdogan has destroyed the regime of Assad in Syria, and threatened Israel from the north.
Today, Turkey held negotiations and mediated the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Rutte at the Istanbul peace talks declared, "Turkey’s power to bring people together is clear. We can see this every day.
It is obvious U.S. President Trump understand's Turkey's importance to thread the needle of peace and end the forever wars.
Trump is the deal maker, the pragmatist. He has no problem working with those who do not share the West's 'values', whatever those are in this globalist world.
Perhaps Trump realizes Europe is corrupt and Turkey may be a more reliable partner.
The globalist Financial Times recently wrote a piece about Turkey's resurgence.
How Türkiye became vital to European security
Türkiye’s military is becoming crucial to European security amid rising Russian aggression.
President Erdogan stated, “European security cannot be thought of without Türkiye… especially with its defence industry.”
Türkiye’s military strength, including the first successful TB3 attack drone launch from TCG Anadolu, gives it leverage in regional stability. Selçuk Bayraktar called this launch “opening the doors to a new world” for Turkish naval power, writes FT.
With 355,000 active personnel, Türkiye is NATO’s largest European military power and controls key Black Sea shipping lanes.
One Western security official said, “The Turks know how to use force and are not afraid to take casualties,” referencing decades of counter-insurgency operations against the PKK.
Türkiye’s defense industry is expanding rapidly, supplying drones, armored vehicles, and warships globally. Companies like STM and ASFAT are building corvettes for Ukraine, while Repkon has set up artillery shell production lines in the US and Germany. Baykar also partnered with Italy’s Leonardo to dominate Europe’s growing drone market.
As Tom Waldwyn of the International Institute for Strategic Studies noted, “Türkiye is trying to tell Europe: ‘Look at what we can do, and how well we can do it.’
