Vice President J.D. Vance traveled to Yerevan, Armenia to meet with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently.
CDM has covered intensely the actions by the Pashinyan government attacking the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church.
During the public ceremony, Vance and Pashinyan signed economic agreements on nuclear power, critical minerals and other sectors. The focus was also on implementing the agreement for the Trump Route for Peace and Prosperity with Muslim Azerbaijan, a corridor across southern Armenia connecting Baku to Turkey.
During the public comments, Vance did not mention the attacks on the Christian church by the Pashinyan administration, but praised the Armenian leader. It is not known of course what was said in private.
Below is a summary of the public appearance between the two officials - the video is below:
Vice President JD Vance (opening/key portions):"It is a great honor to be here in Armenia—the first sitting Vice President of the United States to visit this beautiful country. Thank you, Prime Minister Pashinyan, for the warm welcome and for the historic hospitality extended to my delegation and me.
Armenia is one of the world's oldest Christian nations and a bedrock of Christian civilization. We share a deep faith and values that bind our peoples together across centuries.
This visit marks a strengthening of the strategic partnership between our two nations. Today, we signed a joint statement completing negotiations on peaceful nuclear cooperation—this opens a new chapter in energy ties, including potential small modular reactors and significant investments (up to $9 billion in broader opportunities reported).
We are not just making peace for Armenia; we are building real prosperity for Armenia, the United States, and the region through technology, economic cooperation, and shared security. Private capital flows for regional connectivity are significant, and peace is being built through these partnerships.
The United States is proud to support Armenia's sovereignty, its reforms, and its role in fostering long-term stability in the South Caucasus. We see tremendous potential here—Armenia's leadership, under Prime Minister Pashinyan, is key to making these long-term partnerships stick. Initiatives like critical minerals, AI, semiconductors, defense cooperation (including drones), and de-blockade efforts with neighbors like Turkey and Azerbaijan are advancing.
We appreciate the commitment to U.S.-led peace efforts and look forward to continued high-level collaboration."
Q&A/responses (paraphrased from reports):
On regional peace (Armenia-Azerbaijan/Turkey): Emphasized opportunity for "historic peace that can last" via economic dividends, connectivity, and reduced dependencies.
On U.S.-Armenia ties: Highlighted deepening defense, energy, and tech partnerships as mutual benefits for sovereignty and prosperity.
Noted confidence in Pashinyan's ability to sustain these efforts.
