The issue of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has generated heated arguments in the global Orthodox community for several years since war broke out across Ukraine in 2022. There has been a concerted effort by the U.S. government to target the indigenous Ukrainian Orthodox Church using the American national security apparatus over the last decade.

They have largely been successful in destroying the canonical boy tied historically only in theology to the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow, accusing the UOC of being Russian sympathizers during the conflict.

This has angered Christians around the world where many see the targeting of Christianity the State Department agenda, rather than supporting Ukrainian culture.

Russia seems to see this issue as one to be resolved in peace negotiations currently underway, albeit in a 'fits and starts' manner as the Trump administration looks for a way to end the bloody conflict.

In a recent speech, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared that Russia will never abandon the Orthodox Christians in Ukraine, and will do everything to restore the canonical church there.

"This can be guaranteed by achieving a fair settlement in the Ukraine crisis," he added.

However, many are wary of allowing the Kremlin the moral high ground regarding the issue.

"It is not for Russia but for Ukraine to guarantee freedom of religion and respect all of its citizens," said Bob Amsterdam, the attorney for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

CDM has reported heavily on the issue in recent months.
