CDM has interviewed Attorney Robert Amsterdam repeatedly during his defense of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and the Armenian Orthodox Church on the world stage.
Amsterdam just returned to the U.S. after a trip to Yerevan, Armenia to highlight the plight of the church during attacks by the Pashinyan administration.
Amsterdam is now drawing attention to the attacks on Christianity world-wide.
The press release is below:
Christian Churches Around the Globe are Under Attack from the US to Ukraine
“The reckless and irresponsible perpetrators who have jailed Archbishops and desecrated sacred places should be prosecuted and convicted,” says International Lawyer Robert Amsterdam
WASHINGTON DC, September 4, 2025 – Robert Amsterdam, an international human rights lawyer who represents the major churches of both Ukraine and Armenian Church, says attacks on Christianity are escalating not just in Ukraine and Armenia but everywhere. More than 380 million Christians around the world are facing persecution and discrimination for their faith and according to Open Doors’ World Watch List more Christians than ever recorded faced some form of persecution in 2023. In the US since 2020 there have been over 500 attacks on Catholic churches in 43 states, including the deadly attack on the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. In Nigeria Boko Haram continues to kill Christian farmers in brutal attacks and has displaced more than 4,000 Christians in recent days. In Egypt Muslim violence against Christianity is on the rise. According to Human Rights Watch Islamic mobs have torched Christian homes and attacked schools and institutions while suicide bombers have attacked churches. In Syria over 1000 Christians have been massacred following the overthrow off President Bashar al-Assad. In Armenia the government has attacked the Armenian Apostolic Church—one of the world’s oldest Christian institutions. All four pontifical sees of the Armenian Apostolic Church have spoken out against what they call mounting pressure and persecution by the government. amid a wave of arrests targeting senior clergy, including two high-ranking bishops, and a violent raid by Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) on the Church’s sacred center. Many Armenians claim this to be an attack not just on the Church, but on the soul of the Armenian nation.
In Ukraine the government has imprisoned clerics, desecrated sacred sites, banned the country’s largest denomination church and plans to terminate the leases of all Ukrainian Orthodox Churches. Amsterdam charges that the Ukrainian SBU has engaged in torture, assassinations, imprisonment of clergy, hate, slander and defamation. “Both the Armenian and Ukrainian governments have departed from the rule of law which should be of concern to all who care about democracy. The motivation of the two governments is absolutely to destroy any independent voice.” Amsterdam says in spite of the fact he is Jewish he is speaking up for Christianity because “no church should ever be destroyed.” The Pope as well as the Church of England have condemned violent actions against Christians, but the US Congress continues to remain silent.
