The United Kingdom has paused legislation to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, effectively freezing a controversial deal after strong opposition from U.S. President Donald Trump and the withdrawal of American backing.
A UK government spokesperson confirmed that the agreement would only move forward with full U.S. support. Reports indicate the bill has been dropped from the parliamentary agenda ahead of the new session beginning May 13, casting serious doubt on the future of the pact first announced and signed in May 2025.
The proposed deal would have transferred control of the Chagos Archipelago — more than 60 islands in the Indian Ocean, roughly 2,000 km from Mauritius — while granting the UK a 99-year lease on Diego Garcia, the largest island and site of a vital joint UK-U.S. military base operational since the 1970s. The arrangement was estimated to cost the UK around £9 billion (with average annual payments of approximately £101 million, higher in the initial years).
At the heart of the dispute is Diego Garcia’s strategic importance. The base has supported major operations in conflicts including Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and remains a key asset for intelligence, air, and naval capabilities in the region.
President Trump sharply criticized the plan in January 2026, describing it as “an act of great stupidity” and a sign of weakness. He warned that “China and Russia have noticed” and argued that ceding such important territory undermined national security. Trump later reinforced his stance, calling a long-term lease “tenuous at best” and urging the UK not to lose control of Diego Garcia.
British officials had defended the agreement as essential for securing the base’s long-term future against legal challenges, describing it as “the entire reason for the deal.” However, domestic opposition was fierce. Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel called it “a betrayal of our national interest,” while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage credited pressure from Trump’s allies with helping to “torpedo the terrible deal.” Farage highlighted Diego Garcia’s value, noting it as “the most important American base in the world outside of the American mainland” and raising concerns over potential foreign intelligence risks.
Mauritius has continued to press its claim, with Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful vowing to “spare no effort” to regain sovereignty. The government in Port Louis frames the issue as one of decolonization. Britain has administered the islands since 1814, detaching them from Mauritius in the 1960s ahead of Mauritian independence. The International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion in 2019 recommending their return, and displaced Chagossians have long sought compensation and the right of return.
The pause comes as broader tensions strain U.S.-UK relations, including differences over the Iran conflict and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. Former senior diplomat Simon McDonald described U.S. opposition as having placed the agreement in “the deep freeze.”
While the UK government maintains that the deal was designed to protect national and allied security interests, the lack of U.S. approval has now stalled its progress. It remains unclear whether the legislation will be revived in the next parliamentary session or abandoned altogether. Mauritius has hinted at exploring further legal avenues if the transfer does not proceed.
The development underscores the complex interplay between historical decolonization claims, strategic military imperatives, and great-power politics in the Indian Ocean.
The communists, through Mauritius, want to take control of Diego Garcia, after the United States built everything on it…..just like Taiwan…after the Taiwan people worked so hard and made Taiwan a modern, successful country; China wants it. If China would just be honest and concentrate on their own country instead of being the world’s bully, they could be successful too. But they must change their mindset and look at themselves. They want EVERYTHING.
