Naftogaz Facilities Hit Again
Russia struck Ukraine's Naftogaz gas production facilities in the northeastern Kharkiv region for the third consecutive day, the state-owned energy company said Tuesday morning, as reported by Reuters. The repeated targeting of the same infrastructure — three days running — signals a deliberate campaign to cripple Ukraine's domestic energy production heading into winter, not a one-off strike. Naftogaz has not disclosed the full extent of damage.
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed overnight that Ukrainian forces struck an oil depot and logistics facilities in Russia's Moscow Oblast, as well as six Russian vessels in the Black Sea — including two shadow-fleet tankers carrying sanctioned Russian oil and four dry cargo ships — on July 20, per the Kyiv Independent. Russia also hit a Ukraine-bound gas tanker in the Black Sea, injuring three people, Romania's president confirmed Tuesday morning.
The Political Bomb: Zelensky's Friday Deadline
Ukraine's military crisis is now compounding a political one. For the fifth consecutive day, thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the presidential office in Kyiv chanting "Syrskyi out" — demanding Zelensky reinstate Mykhailo Fedorov, the popular defence minister he fired last week, and dismiss Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi in his place. The Guardian reported Tuesday that Syrskyi is now "expected to lose his job" — citing sources indicating Zelensky is close to bowing to at least some of the protest demands.
Protesters have given Zelensky a Friday deadline. The political calculation is delicate: Fedorov was the architect of Ukraine's celebrated drone warfare strategy, while Syrskyi's conventional attrition approach has drawn internal criticism. The Economist reported that Zelensky "spent the weekend signaling he may make a dramatic reversal." Rumours were swirling Tuesday morning that a decision was imminent.

Wartime protests against a sitting war leader are rare and politically dangerous. This is not a minor cabinet reshuffle story — it is a crack in Zelensky's domestic authority that Moscow is watching closely. The NYT reported that demonstrators include soldiers and veterans who want Zelensky to reaffirm the drone-warfare doctrine. Russia, meanwhile, is retaliating for Ukraine's 400-drone swarm against Moscow last weekend by methodically dismantling the infrastructure that keeps Ukrainians warm. Fires broke out in Russia's Lipetsk region in a reported overnight Ukrainian attack, the Kyiv Independent noted — confirming strikes are flowing in both directions even as the political ground in Kyiv shifts under Zelensky's feet.
