Ukraine launched what may be its most strategically consequential drone campaign of the entire war overnight on August 2nd, striking two of Russia's most critical war-making assets simultaneously: the Engels-2 strategic aviation airbase in Saratov Oblast and the nearby Rosneft Saratov oil refinery. Russian air defenses claimed to have intercepted 635 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones across 16 regions — including Belgorod, Bryansk, Rostov, Saratov, Crimea, and the Moscow region — in what Moscow's Defense Ministry described as one of the largest interception operations since the start of the conflict, according to ARY News and the BBC.
The significance of the Engels-2 strike cannot be overstated. The base, located roughly 850 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, is home to Russia's most feared strategic bombers — the Tu-95MS Bear-H and the Tu-160 Blackjack — the very aircraft Moscow uses to launch cruise missile barrages against Ukrainian cities. According to the Kyiv Independent, Ukrainian forces confirmed striking "a target" at the airbase, triggering fires visible on satellite imagery. Zelensky personally confirmed the operation, stating that both the Engels airfield and the Saratov refinery were hit in the same overnight package, per the BBC.
The Saratov refinery strike is arguably equally significant from a strategic economics standpoint. The facility is one of the largest in Russia's Volga region, with a design processing capacity of approximately seven million tonnes of oil per year, according to Ukraine's General Staff. Preliminary reports indicated that the ELOU-AVT-6 crude distillation unit was on fire following the attack, per United24 Media. A functioning refinery of that scale is not merely a commercial asset — it is a direct contributor to the fuel supply chain sustaining Russian military operations. Targeting it is a direct hit on Putin's ability to wage war.
Russia claims its air defenses achieved a decisive interception rate, but the ground-level damage reports tell a different story. Russian authorities confirmed at least eight civilians killed in the overnight strikes, with fires burning at multiple sites, per DW. Ukraine also struck a Wildberries warehouse and a fuel depot in the same package, according to the Kyiv Independent — broadening the economic pressure on Russian logistics. Moscow claimed the attacks were acts of terrorism targeting civilian infrastructure; Kyiv disputes that characterization, arguing all targets were directly linked to Russia's war machine.

The overnight raid unfolds against the backdrop of Trump's announced pause on U.S. strikes against Iran and the broader question of whether Washington's attention has shifted away from the European theater. Whether the Engels base, which has been struck multiple times over the course of the war, will eventually be rendered operationally useless remains to be seen — but last night's attack was another attempted attack on the fleet of bombers Putin depends on.
Putin is simply not the right leader for a war. He has let this war drag on to the point where Russia is getting overwhelmed with Ukraine's technology.
