Russian ballistic missiles struck the Kyiv region overnight Saturday, and Ukrainian air defenses — as they have for weeks — could not stop them. Per Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and local officials, six ballistic missiles hit the capital and surrounding districts, sparking fires across multiple neighborhoods. Ukraine’s defenders had seconds to respond.
This is not a new problem. It is a structural one. Russian ballistic missiles travel at several times the speed of sound and descend at angles that compress reaction time to near zero. The only systems capable of reliably intercepting them are American-supplied Patriot batteries — and Ukraine does not have enough of them. Per Kyiv’s own officials, the Patriot inventory is stretched across an enormous front line and a dozen urban exposure points simultaneously. The math does not work. It has never worked. More Western hardware has not changed the equation, and there is no credible plan on offer that would.
Ukraine’s air defense gap is not a temporary logistics problem to be solved with the next aid package. It is a reflection of the fundamental strategic reality of this war: Russia has ballistic missile depth that Ukraine cannot match and cannot defend against at scale. Kyiv has known this for two years. Washington has known this for two years. The answer offered by the war caucus on both sides of the Atlantic has been to keep supplying weapons and hope the equation changes. It has not changed.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate passed an 86-11 sanctions package against Russia on Friday — a bipartisan vote that tells you everything about where official Washington stands. Eighty-six senators voted to deepen the conflict. Eleven voted against it. That is the full scope of political opposition to a war approach that has now consumed four years, hundreds of billions of dollars, and has produced no negotiated settlement and no end in sight.
Russia has stated publicly, per Reuters, that it views continued deep Ukrainian strikes into Russian territory as counterproductive to peace. Whether that framing is self-serving or not is beside the point — it reflects the same material reality that Ukraine’s own air defense failures illustrate. The missile strikes continue. The casualties accumulate on both sides.
There is one path that ends the missile strikes on Kyiv: a ceasefire and negotiations. Ukraine does not have the air defense infrastructure to stop Russian ballistic missiles, and the West has demonstrated it will not or cannot supply enough Patriot batteries to close that gap. Zelensky’s government has two choices — continue absorbing strikes it cannot intercept, or come to the table. Washington’s war caucus has spent four years making the first option seem like strategy. It is not. It is attrition with no exit — fighting to the last Ukrainian.
washington knows this, so does Russia.
the whole reason for the war, or most of it was because ukraine was hosting bio labs, like the one at wuhan that leaked the covid to poison the world as part of china's retaliation agsainst trumps tarriffs, with uk depopulated, russia no longer has to worry about that, us no longer has to supply billions and gets a sweet mineral deal on top of it all.
i wouldnt want any biolabs on my border...who knows if a virus like Covid might escape and cause yrs of chaos...
