Diesel prices hit a national average of $6.23 a gallon Monday, according to Bloomberg — a direct consequence of Ukraine's sustained drone campaign against Russian oil refineries, which reduced Russian fuel output and tightened global supply. The higher price at the pump is punishing hard-working Americans who have no stake in this war and never did. Washington has been backing a conflict whose economic fallout lands squarely on the backs of ordinary people.
Russia separately reduced its oil production outlook to a 17-year low and cut its fuel export projections for 2026 and 2027. Ukraine continues to maintain that Russian refineries are legitimate military targets — but Trump's intervention signals that the White House is no longer accepting that framing.
Zelensky described the arrangement as "a proposal" rather than a firm agreement — consistent with his pattern of hedging when Washington applies real pressure. But the direction is unmistakable. The Trump administration wants a ceasefire, and the energy truce announced today is a major step in that process.
