Late Friday night, President Trump announced that the United States had entered into a historic security agreement with Denmark and Greenland. Under the terms of the agreement, the U.S. will permanently manage the security of Greenland and will immediately begin building up its military presence on the Arctic island to address the strategic concerns Washington has regarding the area.
In the announcement on social media, Trump said the deal gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns. He said his administration would immediately begin to develop and build out a much bigger and complete Military Facility in Greenland, in order to safeguard America national and economic interests.
According to the terms of the agreement, no U.S. adversary, including China and Russia, would be permitted to set up a base or military facility in Greenland. New U.S. military facilities to be constructed on the island will guarantee permanent American presence on the Arctic territory, including bases, airfields, radar stations, space monitoring centers, and logistic facilities.
The agreement still needs approval by the full Danish Parliament and the Greenlandic government, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement. The agreement recognizes Greenland and Denmark sovereignty, territorial integrity and the right of both peoples to self-determination, she added. A signing ceremony is expected next week in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The agreement is good for all three governments and recognizes Greenland interests, according to Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
A long period of diplomatic quiet on Greenland came to an end Friday when the President made public the deal he secured with Copenhagen, the culmination of months of behind-the-scenes negotiations. The agreement represents a major foreign policy achievement for Trump in the run-up to the November midterm elections, demonstrating that his America-first approach can deliver strategic wins without conflict.
Greenland importance to the Trump administration has grown sharply as Arctic competition intensifies. The island sits near several Russian military outposts and along routes used by Chinese icebreakers. Its location is critical for controlling Arctic shipping lanes and for early warning of intercontinental ballistic missiles aimed at the American mainland.
The new agreement is expected to greatly expand the current U.S. presence at Pituffik Space Base, previously known as Thule Air Force Base, which has housed U.S. radar and missile defense systems for decades.
The Greenland deal arrives as Trump simultaneously navigates the active conflict with Iran, prepares for a September 24 summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and works to consolidate foreign policy wins before the midterms.
