A new INSA poll for Bild published Saturday, has the CDU/CSU, under the leadership of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, fall to a record low of 18% in the well-respected INSA survey.

The Alternative for Germany, led by federal MPs Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, is at an all-time high of 30% in the same survey. While a week ago the INSA poll had the CDU/CSU at 19% and the AfD at 29.5% – a difference of 10.5% points – the current gap of 12% points is even bigger.

As before, the poll was conducted by means of a telephone survey among 1,202 people and an online survey among a further 1,202 people (overall: 2,404 people). The numbers confirm a trend, namely that under Friedrich Merz, the CDU/CSU loses more and more ground, while all other parties benefit from the Union’s decline.

Thus in the current poll the Social Democrats and the Greens reach 14.5% each, the Left 10%. The Free Democrats and BSW under Sahra Wagenknecht each attract 4% of votes, which however is not enough to win seats in the Bundestag. All other parties together reach 6%.

The governing coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD thus reaches a total of 32% (of votes). This is short of a majority and far behind the 30% poll score of the Alternative for Germany – alone. The FDP and the BSW of Sahra Wagenknecht will not win a seat in the Bundestag either. The numbers published by INSA of late reveal a continuous slump in approval for CDU/CSU and government.

This slide is even reflected by the numbers in the ARD Deutschlandtrend, a survey of approval ratings of politics and for politicians, published this week. In the latest poll of approval ratings of German government and politics, conducted by the research institute Infratest dimap on behalf of ARD Deutschlandtrend among 1,202 people by telephone and online panel from September 28 to 30, only 10% of voters surveyed in Germany praise the work of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whereas 88% express disapproval, thus far the worst approval rating for any politician ever registered in this survey since it started in 1997.

Approval ratings for the German federal government under Merz are as bad: only 10% of voters surveyed in Germany are satisfied with it. One week ago, in an INSA poll for Bild, the Federal Chancellor was even disadvantaged by 78% to 22% – the weakest approval and highest rejection of Chancellor and government ever.

While this is certainly no cause for concern in view of the distant date of the next federal elections, scheduled for 2029, it does however reveal that for now the CDU/CSU under the leadership of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz will find it hard to regain the support enjoyed by the CDU/CSU in the elections in 2025, while all other parties enjoy an upswing in approval.
