For the first time Germany’s armed forces have rated the threat of Russian sabotage at home as “significant”, the second-highest category of threat. The Bundeswehr’s internal assessment of the threat was reported by German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and public television WDR, reported Clash Report. A military spokesperson said that an increased threat rating as a rule led to an increase in security measures to protect troops and facilities.
The assessment bases itself on two drones. The first one was supposed to bring about destruction at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August. Apparently it was intended to attack Ukrainian cargo planes. The second drone was discovered near the Wunstorf air base in the German state of Lower Saxony in mid-September. It probably was intended to attack Bundeswehr planes at the air base.
It was a chance find by a local farmer. It was a drone that had crashed some time earlier, the BKA said later. It had been lying near the base for about two years, and its design was similar to that of the drone found at Leipzig airport.
The analysis states that Russia has almost certainly had the capability to attack German forces for a long time and very likely now has a greater intention to do so. The use of drones which can cause physical damage, the assessment says, is a “red line” which has been crossed. The military names the decline of political and public support for Germany’s military help to Ukraine as Moscow’s likely aim.
The assessment expects the deterioration of Germany’s security situation in the short term and further actions in the near future. Domestic intelligence chief Sinan Selen has called Russian covert actions a “long-term hybrid attack”, and a confidential BKA report counted more than 165 suspected cases of possible sabotage all over Germany by the end of August.
There is, however, by no means unanimous acceptance of this attribution within the German political space. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said in an interview with The Economist that she had seen no evidence in parliament of the Leipzig attack having been carried out by Russia. Welt reported that she refused to call the incident a hybrid attack because there was a lack of evidence to support such a claim.
The Bundeswehr paper is a military assessment of Russian intent and not a court’s verdict of fact. And the single drone found near an air base had, after all, been lying near it for roughly two years before it was found by a farmer.
