Panama is experiencing a nationwide blackout, following an explosion and resulting fire inside one of the generators at the La Chorrera Thermoelectric Power Plant. Firefighters are attempting to extinguish the fire, as authorities state that power should be at least partially-restored in the coming hours; with the explosion believed to have been caused by a “technical fault” within the effected generator.
Concerns over the vulnerability of infrastructure surrounding the facility are well-known.
The incident comes as a battle is brewing between the United States and China over future control of the vital waterway, which is crucial to hemispheric maritime trade.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asked defense officials to “provide credible military options to ensure fair and unfettered US military and commercial access to the Panama Canal,” reported Breitbart.
CNN reported that the request was outlined in a memo sent to senior leaders titled “Interim National Defense Strategic Guidance,” which replaces the 2022 National Defense Strategy and will guide the Department of Defense in line with President Donald Trump’s vision.
NBC News reported that U.S. Southern Command presented draft strategies to Hegseth this week and that potential strategies include “simply ensuring that U.S. ships have safe passage through the canal to restoring total U.S. ownership and operation of it.”
CDM's L Todd Wood interviewed independent journalist Michael Yon recently on this very subject and the discussion is prescient and insightful.
