Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed legislation Monday that strips away the state's 24-week gestational limit on abortion, handing physicians unlimited discretion to perform abortions at any stage of pregnancy. The bill, formally titled "An Act Prioritizing Patient Access to Care" (H.5595), sailed through the Democrat-dominated state legislature last month before landing on Healey's desk — and she wasted no time making her political loyalties clear at the signing ceremony.
"I promise that no matter what Donald Trump or Republicans in Congress or the Supreme Court does, we're going to continue to make sure that women and families have access to the health care that they need right here in Massachusetts," Healey declared. The performance was as much a political broadside against the federal government as it was a policy signing — a blue-state governor loudly announcing that Massachusetts will serve as a sanctuary for late-term abortion regardless of what the rest of the country decides.
The previous law allowed exceptions to the 24-week limit only in cases of the mother's life or a lethal fetal diagnosis. Now those guardrails are gone entirely. Massachusetts joins Alaska, Vermont, Oregon, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota, Michigan, Maryland, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C., as jurisdictions with no statutory gestational ceiling. Republican state Rep. Alyson Sullivan-Almeida was blunt about what this means in practice: "The precedent that we're setting is that a mother can get an abortion up until the moment of birth for a healthy, viable baby."
The pushback from national pro-life organizations was swift. SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser called the signing "barbaric," warning that "tens of thousands of unborn Americans are dismembered limb by limb every single year — and that number will only increase." Dannenfelser also took direct aim at the Republican party's calculated retreat on the issue: "The GOP must abandon the 'leave it to the states' position — a stance that permits egregious late-term abortion laws like this one — and advance national protections for unborn children."
Massachusetts, a one-party legislature, a governor running for re-election, and no meaningful check on what can happen in an operating room at nine months shows true blue state horror. Meanwhile, the United States remains one of only eight countries in the world that permits abortion at any point in pregnancy — a statistic that should embarrass lawmakers of both parties into action.
