Iran is reportedly seriously discussing closing the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping traffic, a move that would spike oil prices; although, the waterway is not as critical for world commodity supply as was the case decades before.
The U.S. would almost certainly become more involved militarily if this development became reality, in order to maintain shipping lanes.
