[Beirut, Lebanon] - Recently in Lebanon, there was a meeting between President Aoun and US envoys Barrack and Ortagus in the presence of US Ambassador Lisa Johnson at Baabda Palace in Beirut. The meeting discussed the preparations for the military plan to disarm Hezbollah.
CDM is not taking a position on the wisdom of such a plan, but we want to highlight some realities on the ground.
First, we understand 40% of the Lebanese Army is likely loyal to Hezbollah. The Iranian Shia proxy army Hezbollah may be very weak militarily at the moment, but they have not lost the support of much of the Lebanese population.
Will this percentage of the army follow through with orders to disarm Hezbollah? Many we have talked to on the ground in Beirut this week doubt they will
Many on the ground here in Beirut believe a new civil war is coming.
The security of the Christian community in Lebanon, and even in surrounding Syria needs to be addressed.
In addition, we have heard from multiple sources in the Christian community that Trump Envoy Morgan Ortagus has not been helpful, but has been needlessly provocative to different factions. If you were wondering, she it 'the stick' in the title of the article.
We have met and talked with many leaders of religious factions here in Lebanon over the last week. Christians in Lebanon feel ignored, with always the U.S. focus being on the well-being of The Jewish State, and not their community.
They are not anti-Israel but would like their voices heard.
That doesn't seem like too much to ask. The Trump administration should hear this, and take it to heart in the negotiations.
It seems to us a strong Christian Lebanese nation would be a good thing for the Middle East in general, and would be very helpful to Israel's security.
