L. Todd Wood again interviewed Dr. Naji Hayek, Vice President of International Affairs of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM), the largest Christian political party in Lebanon, after the Israel-Hamas peace agreement earlier in October 2025.
This comes before the scheduled visit of Pope Leo XIV to Beirut, Lebanon from November 30 - December 2. This is part of his first "Apostolic Journey" outside of Italy. His first stop will be Istanbul, Turkey from November 27-30.
“The Christians of Lebanon have a serious problem,” said Hayek. “Some different factions are backed by Syrians, some backed by Iranians. Many of them are extremists. Some of them hold guns. Whenever they cannot threaten you physically, they threaten to eliminate you.”
“They quietly try to buy land in your areas, and infiltrate your people, and take some powers that the Christian had,” added Hayek, who also mentioned sizeable decreases of Christian populations in Syria and Iraq over somewhat recent years due to emigration and violence.
“What we need now is a prospect of peace,” said. Hayek. “[Lebanon is] one of the trenches of defense and protection of the free world. We need to be assisted.”
